An "alarmed" student called the principal after seeing a PE teacher in a hotel room with a pupil she was allegedly having sex with, a court has heard.

David Nicholls today revealed he found Melissa Tweedie, then 23, allegedly having sex with a pupil, then 18, after prom at a Premier Inn in Glasgow.

Mr Nicholls, the former head of Gleniffer High School in Paisley, Renfrewshire, arrived at the hotel at around 2.10am on June 8, 2017, and was met by six students in the foyer.

He claims they told him Miss Tweedie was in a room with an 18-year-old student.

Nicholls eventually managed to reach Miss Tweedie, now 27, by telephone, and he claimed she was at home at the time. The next day, however, Nicholls admitted that the student had been sleeping in the room with Miss Tweedie.

Ms Tweedie allegedly partied with students at their school prom at the SWG3 nightclub in Glasgow before returning with them to a Premier Hotel in June 2017.

Following an investigation into the allegations, she faces removal from the teaching register by the General Teaching Council for Scotland.

Giving evidence to the committee today, Mr Nicholls said: 'On the night of the prom I became aware that something was wrong. I went to the teachers, Heather Prentice and Lyndsay Cameron. They said Miss Tweedie had left with a group of students. She seemed absolutely fine and calm (at SWG3). I later learned from senior staff that they believed she had become too familiar with a particular older student. The staff told Miss Tweedie that they would get her a ride or a cab. She declined and said she would get a ride from her roommate.

He added, "At 1:45, one of the older boys called me. The boy who called seemed concerned and said Miss Tweedie was at the hotel. He seemed very concerned. When I arrived in the lobby, I found six students, including the principal and vice principal; they appeared concerned and said that a member of the staff was in the hotel. The hotel staff asked the ages of those involved, and when they found they were of age, they said it was not their problem. One of the boys insisted that he had seen her in one of the hotel rooms.

About the moment he reached Miss Tweedie on the phone, Nicholls said, "She sounded a little sleepy. She told me that she had been at the hotel but was now at home. I told her to come see me in the morning. The students showed me how to take a snapshot of my location with my cell phone. I sent it to her and asked her to send me the same.

She didn't reply. I finally got home at 4am and was back at work by 6am.

Mr. Nicholls arranged to meet Student A at Gleniffer High School the next morning.

He said, "The student came alone. He said he had a drink with other students, then they left.

I asked him, 'Did you have sex with a staff member?'

' He said, 'Yes.'

The next day, Nicholls suspended Ms. Tweedie for the duration of the investigation.

He said, "I had a letter in my hand telling her she had to be suspended. They told Ms. Tweedie she was suspended without giving her a chance to speak.

She burst into tears. Shortly thereafter, she left.

Ms Tweedie, who now lives in Dubai and works as a yoga teacher, faces being struck off the register by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) after the allegations were made.
