Attack? Formula 1 track Large cloud of smoke
An explosion has occurred near the Jeddah racetrack. According to media reports, supporters of the Huthi rebels from Yemen attacked a refinery of the oil giant "Aramco" and destroyed parts of it.
The result: a huge fire and a large cloud of smoke, which can also be seen from the city circuit.
Air traffic around the city is currently being diverted. On the flight radar, the planes can be seen turning away or making a wide arc around the city.
Operations at the racetrack have not been suspended for the time being. After the first practice session of the Formula 1 drivers, the Formula 2 cars took to the track as planned. Employees in the paddock also went about their normal activities. The only difference: the smell of burnt gasoline was omnipresent.
It remains to be seen whether Formula 1 will continue normal operations over the next few hours. The bosses of the premier class of motorsport are watching the situation closely. However, according to the English newspaper "The Sun", Sunday's race could be canceled. The reason: concern that there could be further attacks.
It would not be the first Huthi attack during a motorsport event in Saudi Arabia. It was only at the end of February 2021 that a rebel missile attack on the capital Riyadh was repelled when Formula E, the electric equivalent of Formula 1, held its first two races of the season there.
