Violence rocked the city of Willowbrook in southwest Chicago when gunfire erupted at a large gathering, striking at least 20 people, according to local officials and witnesses.
The incident occurred around noon Sunday near the intersection of Honeysuckle Rose Lane and Route 83 (Kingery Highway) in DuPage County. The shooting occurred as a street takeover celebrating Juneteenth was taking place in front of a small shopping center and about 200 to 300 people were in attendance.
The DuPage County Sheriff's Office confirmed the tragic incident and announced that at least 20 people were struck, with one of the victims pronounced dead.
Some of the injured were taken to surrounding hospitals after being transported away in private vehicles.
Eyewitness Markeshia Avery told WLS-TV that the Juneteenth celebration was abruptly interrupted when the shooting began. The cause of the shooting and whether any suspects have been arrested is still unclear.
