Kathy Hochul Political Views
Kathy Hochul (Democratic Party) is the lieutenant governor of New York. She took office on January 1, 2015. Her current term expires on January 1, 2023.
Hochul (Democratic Party) ran for re-election as Lieutenant Governor of New York. She won the general election on November 6, 2018.
Hochul ran on a joint ticket with gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo (D). On August 10, 2021, Cuomo announced his resignation effective August 24. If Cuomo resigns, Hochul will become Governor of New York and serve until January 1, 2023. To learn more about Cuomo's resignation, click here.
Hochul succeeded Robert Duffy, to become the 77th Lieutenant Governor of New York. She previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2011 to 2012 after winning a special election to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Rep. Chris Lee. In 2012, she lost her re-election bid to Chris Collins.
Biography
Hochul was born in Buffalo, New York. She earned a BA from Syracuse University in 1980 and a JD from Catholic University in 1983. Hochul worked as an attorney in private practice. She also served as counsel to Rep. John LaFalce from 1984 to 1986, counsel to Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan from 1986 to 1988, Deputy Clerk of Erie County in New York from 2003 to 2007, and Clerk of Erie County from 2007 to 2011.
