Aariel Maynor is arrested in connection with the murder of Jacqueline Avant after shooting himself in the foot
Police have arrested Aariel Maynor in connection with the murder of philanthropist Jacqueline Avant, wife of music executive Clarence Avant. She was shot and killed during a burglary at the couple's Beverly Hills home.
Aariel Maynor was arrested about 3:30 a.m. Thursday in the midst of another burglary. He had accidentally shot himself in the foot and was found in the backyard of a Los Angeles home, Beverly Hills Police Chief Mark Stainbrook said.
Maynor has a long criminal record and was on probation. He was found with an AR-15-like weapon that allegedly linked him to the Avant murder, Stainbrook said. He is expected to be admitted to prison after treatment at a hospital.
"At this point, we're only looking at him as a suspect, but again, there's a lot of evidence to go through, so we're leaving open the possibility that there could be other people involved," Stainbrook said.
LAPD Deputy Chief Blake Chow said an "astute watch commander in Hollywood" noticed similarities between the two burglaries, prompting investigators working the Avant case to get involved.
Their daughter, Nicole Avant, is a film producer and former U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas who is married to Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos. In a statement, the Avant and Sarandos families expressed gratitude for the many expressions of love, support and condolences.
"Jacqueline was an amazing woman, wife, mother, philanthropist and 55-year Beverly Hills resident who made an immeasurable positive contribution and impact on the arts community," the statement said. "She will be missed by her family, friends and all the people she helped throughout her amazing life."
