Charged with attempted murder

A man charged with attempted murder brutally attacked an Asian woman in New York last week out of hate. A video of the incident shows the woman being punched more than 100 times.

Tammel Esco, 42, was arrested after he allegedly called a 67-year-old woman an "Asian b----," followed her into a building and severely beat her Friday in Yonkers, about 10 miles north of New York City.

Esco was arrested that same day shortly after the alleged incident when officers saw him still outside the building, but Yonkers police announced the arrest and released surveillance video of the attack Monday.

The footage from the building's lobby shows the woman was trying to open the second door to the lobby when she was struck in the head from behind and fell to the floor.

The video shows the woman was punched 125 times and kicked and spit on another seven times.

"This is one of the most brutal attacks I have ever seen. Beating a helpless woman is despicable, and targeting her because of her race makes it even more despicable," said Yonkers Police Chief John J. Mueller.

The woman, who was not identified, is in stable condition at the hospital, according to police. She suffered broken bones in her face and bleeding in her brain in the attack.

Esco was charged with attempted hate crime murder and hate crime assault.

He was arraigned Saturday and remains in custody Monday at the Westchester County Jail, according to inmates. Esco is represented by the Westchester Legal Aid Society, which did not immediately respond to NBC News' request for comment.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano called hate crimes "unacceptable."

"I expect the suspect to be charged to the fullest extent of the law for his heinous acts," Spano said. "My thoughts and prayers remain with the victim and his family."
