Biden threatens assassins with retaliation
U.S. President Biden has threatened the bombers with retaliation after the attacks in Kabul. He said the American soldiers who died were heroes.
US evacuation flights are to continue. The U.S. would not be intimidated.
U.S. President Joe Biden has announced retaliation after the deadly attacks in the Afghan capital of Kabul. “We will not forgive. We will not forget,” Biden said at a White House news conference, addressing those responsible for the attacks. “We will hunt you down and make you pay.
“The U.S. blames the jihadist militia Islamic State for the double attack outside Kabul airport that killed 13 U.S. soldiers, among others. The IS has so far claimed responsibility for one suicide attack.
Military to draw up plans for counterstrike
Biden said he has directed U.S. forces to draw up plans for attacks against the regional IS offshoot Khorasan Province (ISKP) — known in the U.S. as ISIS-K. “We will respond with force and precision (…) in the place and at the time we choose.”
Biden praised the U.S. soldiers killed in the double attack as “heroes.” They had been involved in a “dangerous, selfless mission” “to save the lives of others,” he said. It was the first time U.S. soldiers were killed in Afghanistan since February 2020.
U.S. evacuation mission continues
In his address, Biden also reiterated the ongoing evacuation mission to rescue U.S. citizens and local Afghan forces will continue. “We can and must complete this mission, and we will,” the president said. “We will not be deterred by terrorists. We're not going to let them stop our mission.” The U.S. wants to end the military mission by Aug. 31 — next Tuesday — and get as many people out of the country as possible by then.
